Cognizant suffers Maze ransomware attack

ransomware

Cognizant, one of the largest technology companies in the world has suffered a major ransomware attack.  The ransomware targeted Cognizant employees as well as some of its clients.  Cognizant said the malware outbreak will likely disrupt service for some of its customers, and possibly put them in danger as well.

Maze ransomware not only spreads across a network, infecting and encrypting every computer in its path, but it also exfiltrates the data to the attackers’ servers where it is held for ransom.  If a ransom is not paid, the attackers threaten to publish the files online. The FBI has recently warned businesses of an increase in Maze-related ransomware incidents.

Cognizant stated that it has deployed its own internal security along with cyber defense firms to contain this incident.

Here are some best practices to ensure that your systems and environment are kept safe:

  • Ensure that all systems are patched and up-to-date. This helps ensure known vulnerabilities are no threat.
  • Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security. Extra additional security checkpoints make it harder for someone to hack into a system.
  • Network monitoring can provide system-enhanced vigilance against unusual activities within the environment.
  • And most importantly…. Cybersecurity awareness training for all employees. This helps reduce employees clicking on malicious links or going to sites that may compromise their data
